Is the time for your child to learn a foreign language in today's global village?
The best time to learn another langauge is as a child. If we learn a second or third language when we are young, before puberty, and we lean it from native speakers, we will learn to speak it naturally, without an accent. A " foreign accent comes from the difficulties of overcoming the details of how we learned to speak your mother tougue. Accents shows up in people who leaned a second language after puberty, however they learn grammatical rules faster than younger children, and we (teachers) can see their progress much faster than the one that we can see in younger children. BUT, it is important to know that younger children master second language with no difficulty or struggle. The language centers in the human bain take a set during puberty and lose its flexibility. It does not mean that teenagers cannot learn second language well. They will master them to certain degree/points, but with some accents. Interestingly enough, philologists tell us that if we learn three languages before puberty, your langauge centers will remain adaptive and flexible. Anyone who has learned three languages as a child will be able to learn a fourth and fifith language later in life, and learn to speak it well without an accent.
